Community involvement
In accordance with our mission statement the department has been involved in numerous Community Service activities. We were involved in the following activities;
a) Voter education
At the dawn of the new democracy the department took part in the voter education initiative which resulted in millions of first time voters being familiar with the process of voting.
b) Institute for Multi-Party Democracy (IMPD) The department wrote modules on various political aspects for the Institute of Multi-Party Democracy which were used to teach civil society organisations throughout the country.
c) Training of diplomats The department was involved in giving lessons to the country's prospective diplomats on issues covered in the syllabuses of our three subjects, viz, political science, international politics and African politics.
d) Peace initiative A member of the department was involved in the initiatives to bring peace to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
e) Electoral reform A member of the department was involved in talks on the prospects of changing South Africa's electoral system which is based on proportional representation.
f) Translation of political concepts The department is represented in a structure which is translating political concepts into Afrikaans.
g) Councillor A member of the department serves as a councillor on the Tshwane Metropolitan Structure.
