Course in Financial Management

Effective financial management is of vital importance to any company, particularly if it aims to improve its profitability, liquidity and solvency. The purpose of this course is to teach managers the fundamentals of financial management. The course is aimed at persons with no financial background.

Duration of the course 
Six months.

Registration requirements
A National Senior Certificate (NSC), Grade 12 or equivalent qualification.

Recommendations
An achievement rating of at least 4 for either Accounting or Mathematics, or an achievement rating of at least 5 for Mathematical Literacy is recommended. However these are not admission requirements.

Content
Students must complete the following compulsory modules:

CFIN02G  The Management of Working Capital

Evaluation and examination
Students will be assessed by means of one assignment per module.

A formal two-hour examination for each selected module will be written at official Unisa examination centres. To pass a module, a student must obtain a minimum of 50% in the examination.

Certificate
On successful completion of the course a certificate will be posted to students.

Students who have succesfully completed the course may apply for exemption from the following module of the BBA and BCom degrees offered by Unisa:

• Financial Management (FIN2601)(previously MNF2023)

Students must acquire the following prescribed book:
Marx, J, De Swardt, CJ, Beaumont-Smith, M, & Erasmus, P. 2010. Financial Management in Southern Africa. 3rd edition. Cape Town: Pearson.

Students must also acquire the following financial calculator:
HP10BII.

• First semester: 26 November 2012 to 25 January 2013
• Second semester: 3 June 2013 to 12 July 2013

On receipt of your registration form and the minimum amount, the prescribed study material for all the selected modules, as well as a unique student number, will be dispatched to you. Students must commence their studies as soon as they receive their study material.

The programme commences once a student has downloaded his/her study material from https://my.unisa.ac.za (Printed study material is also available, but it will take a while to reach students by mail).

Students must submit the following simultaneously when registering:

• a Centre for Business Management registration form containing their details
• a copy of their national senior certificate (NSC) or highest academic qualification
• a copy of the first page of their ID
• the minimum payment

Applicants must please indicate qualification code 71293 on their registration forms.
