School of Law

Welcome to the School of Law

Prof MK Havenga
Director of School of Law

The origins of Unisa’s College of Law can also be traced back to 1873: at that time, the Board of Public Examiners was replaced by the University of the Cape of Good Hope, and the Certificates in Law and Jurisprudence offered by the Board were replaced by the University’s Certificate of Proficiency in Law and Jurisprudence and the LLB degree (Bachelor of Laws).

After the merger with Technikon SA and Vudec during January 2004, the faculty of Law is known as the College of Law.  The College is housed in the Cas van Vuuren Building on the main campus of Unisa in Pretoria.

The College consists of nine teaching departments: Private Law; Mercantile Law; Constitutional International and Indigenous Law; Jurisprudence; Criminal and Procedural Law; Criminology; Police practice; Corrections Science and Security Risk Management. At present, the teaching staff numbers more than 200, with approximately 30 000 students registered in 2004, making it the largest faculty of law in Southern Africa, and in Africa. In addition, the Faculty offers a number of certificate programmes (see the Certificate Programmes page).
