Our offices are situated on the main Muckleneuk campus in Pretoria, South Africa, while we also have a bookshop for direct sales in Unisa’s new Registration Hall, in Sunnyside, Pretoria. This is one of the largest academic publishers of books as well as journals on the continent Africa, with a staff component of less than fourty people. Unisa Press publishes some 30 new academic and scholarly titles each year, screened and peer-reviewed through Unisa’s Senate Publications Committee. With a primary focus on the African continent, our books cover a wide range of subject fields – from politics to climate change and sustainable development; religion and theology to history; art, music and media studies to economics and law; textbooks and conference proceedings to coffee table books. Book Series Unisa Press publishes a variety of acclaimed book series. One of their flagship series is steadily growing Hidden Histories series, which explores untold stories of South Africa’s past, and the comprehensive SADET Road to Democracy series. Other series on the list include African Initiatives in Christian Mission; Memory and African Cultural Productions; and the Imagined South Africa series. Academic Journals Unique within the publishing industry on the continent, is the fact that Unisa Press also publishes a wide range of academic journals (of which the bulk is accredited). Around half of the over 40 journals are hosted online with journals partner Taylor and Francis (with NISC acting as its SA distribution support arm). Another group of journals are hosted online by SABINET. Subject fields covered by journals range from communication and cultural studies, education, language and literature, linguistics, law, politics, gender studies, sociology, agricultural economics, nursing science, mathematics, science, herpetology, information science, social work, philosophy, psychology, history, musicology and history of art. Hiddingh Currie Book Award for Academic Excellence Unisa Press annually hands out its Hiddingh Currie Book Award for Academic Excellence. This is a prestigious research award for authors of published works within Unisa Press, and comes with a modest monetary reward. The aim of the prize is primarily to encourage and nourish specialised skills in academic research and scholarly publishing. Recent award winners are Gaby Magomola for his book Robben Island to Wall Street, Betty Govinden for her book Sister Outsiders, and Ralph Hamman and co-editors for their book The Business of Sustainable Development. On Thursday, 15 March, the 2011/2012 Hiddingh- Currie prize is awarded to Prof Anthony Court for his book entitled: Hannah Arendt’s Response to the Crisis of Her Times (published within the Savusa Series, Unisa Press with Rozenberg, the Netherlands).Prof Court is chief researcher in Unisa’s Chair of Holocaust and Genocide Studies in the College of Graduate Studies. The criteria for awarding the Hiddingh-Currie Award are that the work should be of an academic or artistic nature and of the highest quality which contributes to the understanding or development of a discipline, and that the work should address a specific need or problem in society.
