Courier service


What do the courier services entail?

A courier service provided by a private company, at a fee, is available between the Main Library in Pretoria and the branch libraries in Cape Town, Durban, Polokwane, East London, the Regional Offices in Nelspruit, Bloemfontein, Kimberley and Umtata, the University of Port Elizabeth and University of Port Elizabeth Vista Campus.

There is also a courier service between the Regional Office in Umtata and the East London Branch Library and between the Branch Library in Cape Town and the Registration Facility in Wellington.

A courier service has also been introduced between the Main Library in Pretoria and six centres, two in Zimbabwe, two in Mauritius, one in Botswana and one in Swaziland.

These six centres are :

  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Harare, Zimbabwe
  • Ulwazi Institute in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe
  • De Chazal Du Mee Business School in Quatre Bornes, Mauritius
  • Mascareignes Academy of Law, Economics and Management in Rose Hill, Mauritius
  • PMV Training College in Gabarone, Botswana
  • Snicle Consult (Pty) Ltd in Mbabane, Swaziland

A courier service has also been introduced to the following registration points in Namibia :

  • Gobabis
  • Katima Mulilo
  • Oshakati
  • Otjiwarongo
  • Rundu
  • Tsumeb

Students do not pay for requests which are sent from the Main Library to these centres, but are responsible for the cost of sending material back via the courier.

A courier service, free of charge, is operated in conjunction with Technikon SA to Benoni and Vereeniging.

A courier service, free of charge, is also available between the Main Library and the Johannesburg Branch Library.

In the case of the free courier service, no costs are involved in the delivery of the material from the Main Library or the return of material to the Main Library.

What procedures apply if I wish to make use of this courier service?

When requesting books, periodical articles and audiovisual material via the courier service to : Cape Town, Durban, Polokwane, East London, Nelspruit, Bloemfontein, Kimberley, Umtata, Port Elizabeth, Benoni, Vereeniging, Wellington, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Swaziland and Namibia one of the following words must be clearly written in capital letters at the top of each request card :

A contact telephone number for the student must also be written on the request card.

As in the case of other requests, the request card may be posted or faxed to the Main Library, or it may be handed in at a branch library or centre. The branch libraries or centre fax the requests to the Main Library free of charge.

Requests received at the Umtata Regional office will be sent to the East London Branch library from where available material will be posted to the student, or if so instructed, couriered to the Umtata Regional Office. Requests for material which is not available in the East London Branch Library will be forwarded to the Main Library.

If the items are available, they will be forwarded immediately, free of charge, to the relevant library, regional office or centre.

The material should reach the point of delivery within 5 working days.

How will I receive my requested material via the courier services?

The onus is on the student to phone the library, regional office, registration facility or centre after about four days to enquire if the requested item has arrived.

When collecting the item, the student will be asked to sign an acknowledgement of receipt.

Material not claimed within ten working days will be sent back to the library from which it was couriered.

What happens if I don't collect requested material?

If material is not collected, the item will be couriered back to the Main Library in Pretoria, the Branch Library in East London or Cape Town.

A note will then be placed on the student's record, stating that courier items were not collected and that a penalty of R7,00 is payable. Students in Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Swaziland will be responsible for the cost of sending these items back to the Main Library in Pretoria.

Steps may also be taken to prevent the student from making use of the courier services again.

May I return books and audiovisual material via the courier services?

Students may return books and audiovisual material from the branch libraries in Cape Town, Durban, Polokwane and East London, the regional offices in Nelspruit, Bloemfontein, Kimberley and Umtata, the University of Port Elizabeth, University of Port Elizabeth Vista Campus, Benoni and Vereeniging.

Students may also use the courier service in Umtata to return material to the East London Branch Library and the courier service in Wellington to return material to the Cape Town Branch Library. Items to be couriered need not be packaged.

Students may hand in library material which has been borrowed from the branch libraries in Cape Town, Durban, Polokwane and East London at the Main Library to be sent by courier service to the branch libraries.

Students in Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Swaziland and Namibia should contact the centre they will be using to enquire about arrangements for returning library material to Pretoria.

Is there any cost involved when returning library material via the courier service?

The cost of returning library material via the courier service is R7,00 per item (with the exception of Johannesburg, Benoni and Vereeniging, which are free of charge).

Each item being returned must be handed in with a coupon to the value of R7,00. These coupons may be bought at the lending desks of the libraries or at the Nelspruit, Bloemfontein and Kimberley Regional Office, except in Umtata where coupons must be purchased from the offices of Sun Couriers, Excelsior Complex, Eliot Road, Umtata.

Please ensure that the correct amount is available when coupons are purchased, as the cashier may not have change.

Students in Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Swaziland and Namibia should contact the centre they will be using to enquire about arrangements for returning library material to Pretoria.

Will I receive a receipt for library material returned via the courier services?

When items are returned, a receipt is issued to the student and signed by the librarian or regional office assistant.

Students are advised to keep the receipt as proof that the items have been returned.
